Phoebe Elizabeth Apperson Hearst was born in St. Clair, Missouri, the daughter of Drucilla (Whitmire) and Randolph Walker Apperson. Edward Bright Hussey (1897-1976) graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in architecture in 1923. He worked during the summers for Julia Morgan, and spent the summer of 1921 in San Simeon working on the Hearst Castle. Hussey was the on-site architect for a number of Morgan projects, including the Honolulu YWCA and the Tokyo YWCA. Bernard Ralph Maybeck (1869-1957) studied architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Returning to New York, he worked for Carrere and Hastings. Maybeck sought his fortune out West in 1890, first in Kansas City, then in San Francisco. In 1890, Maybeck married Annie White, who became his office manager.
